This year's Maxi 3 Hour was run in the area of Glenluce -
classical spur-gully orienteering in superb terrain for faster
runners. Combined with (mainly) moderate course-setting this
event provided a great opportunity for newcomers to the bush and
many took the opportunity to come out for a run.
The weather was perfect - possibly a little
too warm, but a nice change from the chilly mornings of recent
times. The start location was as pretty a spot as one is likely
to find - a clearing, just big enough for the number of cars
expected, but one that provided a terrific atmosphere for those
that had completed their run and were waiting for others to
arrive home. The
catering crew did a great job - thanks to all concerned - and
the prizes/brief presentations provided a good ending to a great
day in the bush. Thanks to everybody that took part - the
results are shown below - please send any feedback, updates or
suggestions to

Feedback Received:
-
The course was too
short; comment from a Junior team that had left 3
controls out and arrived back early.
-
The terrain was
beautiful, I didn't have to climb over any logs or debris at
all; (Just part of the Emus service Judy, we had taken a
lot of trouble to predict your likely path and sent runners
out earlier that morning to clear a path for you. Glad you
enjoyed it).
-
Some of the
controls were a bit too close to one another; yes, this
is probably true...but I suspect that the younger kids that
took part enjoyed this more. We'll make the course a little
longer next year.
Pre-Event Information:
| What is
the Maxi? |
: |
Individual
orienteers and teams of 2-5 people navigate their way
through the bush to visit as many controls as they can in a
3 hour period.
Controls are
worth varying points, taking into account difficulty of
navigation and distance travelled. Instead of a control
card, a team member carries a Sportident stick to record and
time control visits electronically. Navigation is medium
difficulty, and route choice is very important.

Orienteering Map produced for the World Masters Games in
2002. Map 1:15,000 scale, 5 colours, 5 metre contours.
Control sites will be pre-marked on map. Glenluce presents a
diverse set of technical challenges, most of the forest is
open and easy to move through, but the complicated
gully/spur terrain offers ample scope for the feet to move
faster than the brain. Pockets of old gold workings, which
require close attention to map detail, complement the other
challenges.
