Great Southern Bike Ride

The GSBT was a nice ride. Ron Frederick, Derek Morris, Helen Edmonds and I went both ways. Tom, Chris and Daniel Edmonds rode the first day to Toora approx 67 km and Robyn Sunderland and Helen Schofield were our support crew. Alice and Kate came along but only rode around Toora. We had a terrific meal at the pub, a swim and spa at the Toora Caravan Park and some visited the wetlands, Agnes Falls and the Wind farms.

Womens Coaching Weekend

Several Emus went to this training weekend last year - it provided a really informative and fun weekend away. This year the weekend will be held at Maldon between Friday 10th March and Sunday 12th March 2006. Starts with the evening meal on the Friday. (there will be an optional half day on the Friday afternoon for those who want to drive up early).

It is open to all women 18 years and over. If you are new to orienteering this is for you! Come and learn the basics of bush orienteering in a friendly and non threatening atmosphere. Orienteers will work in ability groups so whatever your experience you will be catered for. To date 16 women have booked in, so there are 9 spaces left (as of last week). Cost of the weekend is $127. The course is subsidised by a grant from VicHealth.

Deadline is February 24th, but it is first come first served! Email: voa@netspace.net.au or ring into the Office 9459 0853 to register. Full details and registration forms will be emailed/sent out once you register.

Recent Events

24 Jan - Boeing Reserve - Strathmore

Like so many of the recent evenings, this one was a tad warm Fortunately, the course setter had set a course that allowed all but about 300-400m to be in the extensive parklands in the area - great course setting. I particularly liked the somewhat perverse location of control 13 - at the top of a very long flight of stairs. Many of those that climbed the stairs were tempted to run to the other controls that were up on the plateau - but this proved to be their undoing as course lengths for those controls were much longer. Fells, Hudsons (with fit little nephew in tow), Alex and Lenore, Phil Giddings, Sue and Helen all made it out on the night.

25 Jan - Bennetswood Street-O

It was a warm night, but parking was under-cover and the start location was a park next to Gardiner's Creek. Rachel Johnson set the course for us and certainly set a demanding course - that tested most of the 140 that attended. Thanks the Johnson clan for setting the course and running the evening - it was good to see Erica again! Thanks also to those that pitched in to collect controls at the end of the evening. It was the perfect spot for a BBQ, made all the more pleasant by the availability of bread products from Peter Maloney - who regularly brings sacks of left-overs from work.

26 Jan - Australia Day - Greensborough

Turnout was a little disappointing - maybe it was the initial forecast of 41 degree heat or perhaps it was the torrential rain on the way to the event - but only 67 turned up on the day. This was a shame really - Greg Williams had set an excellent course on an upgraded map provided by Ian Stirling. As an added bonus, Schon and Lauris had made fruit salad and served this chilled after the event - it was scrumptious (and healthy too!). Thanks ladies!!!

MTBO Summer Series.

The events are intended as an introduction to MTBO or as a simple fun event that won’t take up too much time for competitors and organisers alike. All events will start at 6.00pm to avoid the heat of the day, should it be hot. The events are 75 minute score events, so competitors can choose which controls they visit and how long (up to 75 minutes) they wish to be out. Get there early (from 5.15pm) on the day to register and get organised. If you wish, stay around after for a BBQ (BYO food/drinks) and debrief with other competitors. These events will be a good training hit out for the first Vic State Series event at Mirboo North on Sunday Feb 5 and also for the Vic Middle Distance Champs/Aust Selection races and double-header state series events on Feb 25 & 26.

Maryborough MTBO Feb 25/26:

If members were wondering about ever trying out a MTBO event, this is the one to start on. The tracks are not technically difficult and the area is quite flat, the flattest we use. It would be quite OK to use a standard road bike. We have map boards to loan out for free. Some of us are staying at the Maryborough Caravan Park in tents and cabins. You should book your accommodation as early as possible.

NE Events for 2006 from Rob Edmonds

Thank you to Ron and Cheryl for volunteering to course set the Maxi Course at Whroo. The VOA has left us with the August 13th date – no compromise here unless we go for Saturday Sept 2, which isn’t a great option when we have to consider setting up the courses, assembly area and catering. We are still looking for a controller for the Maxi; a course setter and an organiser for the MTBO event at Whroo on May 21; and an organiser and a controller for the You Yangs State Series event on July 9. Please get back to me asap if you can fill one of these roles.

In future, we will publish this information on the club website and publish a link and/or requests for helpers etc via the newsletter.
