2008 Maxi 3 Hour

Latest Updates:

Ron Frederick puts water out at one of the control sites in the pine forest. Good running on soft pine needles. A very pretty control site. Overall winners of the Solo Category - David Brownridge and Adam Scammell - finishing all controls in 2 hours 12 minutes. Adam was 1 minute later, although it's interesting to note that his route choice was about 800m longer.

This year's Maxi 3 Hour was run at St George's Lake just east of Creswick. Although numbers were lower than is usual for this event (due to fixture clashes and the Australian Championships in Queensland), we still managed to get a good crowd. Particular thanks to the schools groups that attended - it was terrific to see the enthusiasm portrayed by some of these kids as the ran through the bush and charged into the finish. Well done to all of you!

We were a bit concerned with the weather. Those of us that had stayed in the area overnight experienced severe storms just before dawn and when it started raining about 9:30 many of us grabbed wet weather gear. As it turned out, the rain stopped quite quickly and we ditched coats or carried them for the rest of the event. While we did have a few periods of warm sunshine the conditions were generally quite cool with a brisk wind from the South West - terrific running conditions for a longer-distance event such as this.

Course-Setters Ian and Lauris looking surprisingly relaxed just before the event. Understanding that there were a lot of school kids attending this year, they placed most controls in locations that were fair for orienteers of this level of experience. A dam in the middle of a new pine plantation. Surprisingly, most dams in the area were full up.

Sincere thanks to all of the Emu members and friends that pitched in to help out - I note that several couples came up to help even though they did not plan to run in the event. The catering crew did a great job - the home made soup and plentiful cakes were certainly appreciated after the run - and the prizes/brief presentations provided a good ending to a great day in the bush. Thanks to everybody that took part - the results are shown below - please send any feedback, updates or suggestions to geoff@orienteering.com.au
